Extra virgin olive oil is one of the key components of the Mediterranean diet, the most healthy diet available. Many scientific studies have been carried out on the properties of this food, and it is now proven that extra virgin olive oil helps lower cholesterol levels, can aid in the control of high blood pressure and diabetes, it has great antioxidant power and it contributes in the keeping of a healthy heart.
Nonetheless, latest research has focused on the benefits that olive oil could have in the fight against cancer. Javier Menéndez, a molecular biologist from the Institute for Health Research of Northwestern Chicago, carried out a study which confirmed that consumption of oleic acid (present in olive oil), considerably reduces one of the oncogenes associated with the most aggressive cancer tumors. On the other hand, Jose J. Gaforio, from the University of Jaen (Spain), discovered that squalene, another component of olive oil, could help prevent breast cancer.
Olive oil is rich in vitamins A, D, E and K. It helps in the absorption of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc. This makes it particularly important during childhood, when children’s bones are forming, and also during old age, to prevent osteoporosis. It is also good against heartburn, and is a fantastic skin tonic.
Research continues, since we know that olive oil has over 500 beneficial components, but as Francisco Perez, from Hospital Reina Sofia in Cordoba (Spain), explains “only one tenth of its benefits are known to us so far”.
