Chorizo: the spanish sausage that britons love
Practically unknown 10 years ago, it is now consumed in 42% of British homes. Yes, chorizo has become really popular in the UK, according to a survey carried out by the magazine Olive, which in its 10th anniversary issue has published the gastronomic preferences of the British population.
Second in popularity after our delicious red sausage is sweet chili, present in 35% of homes, followed by prosecco, the Italian bubbly, which is regularly consumed by one out of four adults in the British Isles.
Data from the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX) indicates that exports of chorizo. Much of this success is owed to British chefs that are declared fans of Spanish gastronomy. Such is the case of Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson or Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, all of whom add chorizo regularly to their recipes. Many of them also use this charcuterie in unconventional ways, creating recipes inspired in Spain that are truly international, like scallops or risotto with chorizo. amounted to €315 million in the year 2012. This trend is also observed in the UK, where sales have been growing 10% per year over the last 20 years.
James Robinson, Marketing Director of Brindisa, a company that sells Spanish foods in the UK, says that chorizo is a fashionable product with a clear increasing popularity, especially raw chorizo used for cooking, but also the cured variety, ideal on any platter.
It is now easier to find good quality chorizo in the gourmet shops and restaurants of London.
